We’re just chomping at the bit to get some serious miles under our wheels after one of the weirdest years on record. So when we heard that the crew at Celtic Horizon Tours are organising a unique escorted motorcycle tour to Galway and the West of Ireland we actually danced a little jig of joy around the office slash converted shed that we’ve been working in for the last eleven and a half months.
We leave the city early enough in the morning of the 7th of October and make our way to the Circle K Services on the M6 Athlone. This is on the Dublin side of Athlone and is accessible both East and West Bound carrigways. Get there early and please ensure that you have eaten and your bike is fueled up. There will be ‘prizes’ for those who get it wrong!
At 10.30am we’ll be heading west. We’ll take the N65 to Loughrea, before riding across to Gort and into the Burren. Here we’ll have photostops at Fr Ted’s House, the Poulnabrone Dolmen as well as a visit to Hazel Mountain Chocolate. We’ll be hugging Galway Bay enroute to the Connemara Coast Hotel which will be our base for the duration.
Celtic Horizon Tours Go West - Clifden
Day two is Friday and after having a rather excellent breakfast we will ride out at 9am. We’ll be heading for Kylemore Abbey and we’ll stay with the coastal theme and travel via Kilkieran, Carna Bay, Roundstone, Ballyconnneely, before stopping for a coffee break in Clifden. From here we take to the legendary Sky Road and travel through Cleggan before we divert off at Leterfrack to take in Rinvyle and Lough Fee. This will see us complete the Connemara Loop before we arrive at Kylemore Abbey. We return to our hotel on the N59 via Clifden.
On day three we’ll once again depart the hotel at 9am. We’ll be heading for Leenaun via Maam Cross and the Inagh Valley. Passing Asleah Falls we travel up the Famine Road before visiting Glen Keen Farm for our coffee break and a sheepdog demonstration! We next head for Silver Strand and the Lost Valley before looping back via Louisbourgh to take in Croagh Patrick, but not as you know it! We next ride to Partry before heading down the Western Shore of Lough Mask. Passing Loch Na Fooey we travel through Maam on the way back to our hotel and a well earned dinner.
On Sunday morning we’ll be on the road for 9am and using the R336 we turn off at Derroe and take the high road to Oughterard before turing for Maam Cross, Cornmona, Clonbur, Cong, before taking a cross-country route to Athlone and the end of our tour.
