Superbike Schooled

The eyes have it!

Keith Code, a Californian rider who’d seen enough common errors being made on track by riders founded the California Superbike School way back in 1980. The idea was to take riders of all skill levels and arm them with a set of skills that would take their riding to the next level while also making them safer as well as more efficient.

These days the school, or it’s franchises, can be found all over the world. In the UK the company run their training days from a number of circuits. Brands Hatch, Donington and Oulton Park are complimented by the companies base at Bedford Autodrome.

A whole lot of attention is given to each of the companies clients. Events are run on an on track ratio of one coach to three students. There are four different levels that all riders are obliged to take inclusive of all skill levels. Everyone gets 'Superbike Schooled' from the same syllabus.

If he can learn, then so can you!

While initially a bit of an intimidating idea, the technical skills are thought in the classroom which works really well as a way to analyse our riding. The paddock is used for slower work where the skills being learned are thought and then practised out on the track. Each time a rider comes in from the circuit the instructor offers them a full debrief.

You will, however, need a full face helmet.

It’s not only that the School team are qualified and technically proficient, they’re also an approachable bunch. I was initially worried that some of my questions would sound a little daft, but apparently they’ve heard them all before!

You don’t need a sports bike to take part, there was even a GoldWing out on the day I did my first level! The school have a partnership with Kawasaki, So if you’d prefer to use something other than your own bike then the team will hire you a choice of machines from the range.

Each one is slightly better looking than the last...

The first event is on the 7th of May in Donington. Ryanair fly in from Dublin to East Midlands airport which is a three minute taxi ride from the circuit.
