Arai RX-7V HRC Special

Well Earned

If you’re a racing fan or have been lucky enough to have owned or ridden an RC 30, an RC 45 or an SP 1 then you’ll be aware of the Honda Racing Corporation. HRC is where all the great Honda race bikes are built and built with one purpose in mind, that is to win!

Arai has recently signed a deal to celebrate two of, arguably, the most famous HRC bikes, the 750cc RC 30 and the 400cc NC 30, with a new Aldo Drudi designed helmet. The helmet shows the Honda racing colours, with the HRC logo featuring prominently and the famous Honda wings that are synonymous with the brand on both sides. Best of all, the new helmet is a limited edition offering.

As befits a design of its pedigree the helmet it’s dressed with is, of course, the class leading RX-7V model. To make the RX-7 Arai uses a net structure core. This is assembled and bonded within the companies Super Fiber and other special synthetic fibers. These special fibers are also used for the visor panel of Formula 1 helmets. They have superb characteristics in terms of tensile strength and flexibility.

Arai shells are carefully molded with multiple material layers including a Super Fiber belt across the helmet, just above the visor opening. This adds extra strength. They have also developed a new resin in pursuit of a lightweight but very strong shell.

In any helmet, regardless of brand, the amount of energy that can be absorbed is limited. Therefore, avoiding potential impact energy by glancing off should also be a key function of a helmet. To this end Arai have been pursuing a sleek shape that is more likely to glance off energy. Most shield mounting systems require indents with a high pivot point in the shell, even Arai, so as to open and close the shield.

On the new "VAS" (Variable Axis System), the mounting position was lowered 24mm in pursuit of this ideal smoother shape. This increases the ability of glancing off energy. As a result, this has made it possible for the shell to be completely smooth above the test line of the exacting Snell standard.

The HRC tribute Arai RX-7V HRC Special is available from Megabikes in Dublin.
